Facts About Children’s Smiles

Posted .

Your dentist, Dr. Nichols and Cronkrite, wants your child to have the strong, healthy and top-notch smile they deserve. However, that goal is not possible without your help. Unfortunately, if you don’t know much about your child’s smile, you’re limited with all of the things you can do for their teeth and gums. So, it’s best to know all about your child’s smile. To teach you a little bit about it, your dentist is happy to share some facts about children’s smiles. Those facts are:

-Baby teeth are also known as primary teeth or deciduous teeth. Your child should have 20 baby teeth once they all grow into place. They should begin erupting from the gums around 4 to 6 months of age and should stop erupting around 3 years of age.

-The baby teeth are very important because they help your child chew and talk, and they also act as placeholders for your child’s adult teeth below. Your child should start losing their baby teeth around 6 to 8 years old.

-Your child’s baby teeth will be replaced with 32 adult teeth. Those should include eight incisors, four canines, eight premolars and 12 molars.

-Make sure to clean and care for your child’s teeth regularly. You can do so by brushing twice a day once the first tooth erupts, flossing once a day when the teeth are tightly knit together, and bringing them into our office every six months starting around their first birthday.
