Fluoride Supplements Might Help Prevent Tooth Decay

Posted .

Inconsistent oral hygiene practices are often the root cause of tooth decay and gum disease problems. If you fail to remember to brush your teeth twice each day or you sometimes forget to thoroughly floss, bacterial deposits can start to accumulate on your teeth.

In a relatively short amount of time, they can cause a buildup of oral plaque acids which are capable of demineralizing tooth enamel. As the problem progresses the acidic oral environment can increase your chances of suffering from tooth decay and other dental health problems. Families that don’t have ready access to fluoridated, municipal water are also at increased risk of tooth enamel demineralization.

Having a dental checkup performed twice each year by a dentist like Dr. Nichols and Cronkrite will not only clean your teeth but will also serve to monitor the health of your teeth and gums. If they finds early signs of tooth enamel erosion, they might recommend administering a fluoride treatment. This can often be done during the same appointment.

If there are further concerns about the strength of your teeth they might also provide you with a prescription for fluoride supplements. When used as directed they can help you maintain strong teeth between your regularly scheduled dental checkups.

Concentrated fluoride toothpaste or and fortified mouthwash are two of the more popular types of fluoride supplement. Once you apply them to your teeth you should abstain from eating or drinking for up to half an hour to allow the fluoride to saturate the microscopic pores in your tooth enamel.
